New Drawing Progress

Here is an update on my new drawing. It is a challenge to stick to the 12 pencils in the set that i am using. Sometimes i'm tempted to use one of my other sets to get some of the colors that i need. 
However i will resist the urge and keep on going!

New Drawing

This is some work in progress on a new drawing that i'm making. I'm using a set of 12 colors from a sample set that i received to test. It's a bit of a challenge to work with a limited palette of color, but it is slowly getting there and i like the challenge.

ToyColor Watercolor paint

It has been a busy week with a lot of custom orders and work around the house. This left me with little time to update my blog and facebook page.

I received a few boxes of watercolors from ToyColor to try and to give my opinion on them.
I first tried the 24 set of watercolors below

These watercolors are suitable for hobby and school.
Using this set i made the painting below (the painting is entirely made using these watercolors)

It's always a challenge to change from professional grade materials!
Here is what i think about these paints.

Plus points: 
I like the color range, especially the turquoise and flesh color. I used the flesh color on the flowers and mixed with the pink it created a very nice gradient. 

You can make nice pastel shades with them. 

The colors are transparent and you can easily layer colors on top of each other to achieve different tones. 

The pigments are liftable, so if you make a mistake it is easy to fix. 

The box can be folded in half and is practical to carry around.

The plastic cover can be used as a mixing pallet. 

Minus Points:
Some of the colors are not very pigmented( the blue, yellow and orange), but the browns, black and reds seem to have more pigment. Overall the pigment level varies per color. 

The cakes are quite hard and you need to add a lot of water to release the pigment.

They don't really blend with each other when using a wet on wet technique. If you put 2 wet colors next to each other they do not merge. They also seem to stay on top of the paper. 

The sets come only with a flat brush. In my opinion a round brush would also be nice to have (for the painting above i used a Winsor & Newton cotman round synthetic brush as i almost never paint with flat brushes)

Overall its a good school and hobby set, but there is always room for improvement! :)

I'm looking forward to try the pearly/ metallic watercolors. I think those would be really great for crafting, layering and art journaling.

Celebration Drawing Finished

After being sick and slowly getting back into painting and drawing i finally managed to finish my drawing "Celebration".
The drawings also had to be put aside for a while as i have multiple custom orders open, but i managed to find some time and finish it nonetheless.

The drawing is made with Faber-Castell Polychromos on Fabrianno drawing paper 5.5x8 Inch

During the last few days i have had the bad luck of being struck by a cold. Thanks to this i have not been able to sleep properly nor do any work. Today however i was finally feeling better and with that i went back to work if only for a few hours.

I like how these little plants are so full of color and that was why i decided i wanted to draw them.

Work in progress "Celebration"

A new month and a new drawing. This time i chose celebration as a theme. i know its a bit early, but if you think about it its only 8 months till Christmas. I think this drawing would make a nice printed postcard / greeting card one its done.

White Nights Watercolours Review

I recently purchased a set of  12 White Nights watercolors and have been trying them out in my bird and landscape paintings. I must admit that these are my new favorite watercolors.
I own multiple watercolor brands, however i find myself getting this set out every time i'm about to start a new painting. I would really like to have the 36 pan set, however they were not available in the local store where i usually buy my materials.

What i really like about these paints is that they are very creamy and pigmented. The colors are very bright and they do not have a big color shift once they dry. So what you see when the color is wet, is pretty much what you will get as a final result. 
They pans stay creamy after using them and they do not crack or dry excessively. This way when you start to paint with them again they are ready to mix with just a little bit of water.  

The colors mix very well together and you can obtain a lot of nice shades even with the set of 12. 
They can be either transparent or opaque depending on the pigment / water ratio used. 
This is great if you want to cover previous layers. 
You can also obtain beautiful washes and overlay colors when you dilute them with more water.

Most of the colors have good light-fastness (as also stated on the producer's website) so they are safe to use for professional works that need to last a lifetime. Some of the colors (especially the blues and browns) lift very easy, so if you make a mistake or want to add some highlights you can lift the pigment by using a harder brush. 

Overall it's a very versatile product and great value for money. They are definitely in the more affordable range of artist grade materials. The small set is perfect for taking with you on the go, as it offers a good variety of colors and can use the lid of the box as a mixing palette. 

I whole heartily recommend these, if they are available in your region give them a try!
I will make sure i stock on a few sets to introduce them during my summer workshops.

Original Colored Pencil Drawing "Easter Bunny"

My colored pencil drawing of a rabbit with Easter eggs is done!
The drawing took about 4 hours to create and was made with Derwent Artist colored pencils.

Work in progress "Easter Rabbit"

Here is the next work in progress. I decided to make a little Easter bunny as Easter is only 3 days away. For this drawing i am using Derwent Artist pencils and i will include a review of these pencils once the drawing is done.

The Artist pencils come in a range of 120 colors which can be purchased in a set of 72 with the remaining 48 pencils bought separately (Open stock pencils can be a pain to get depending on where you live) or a wooden box which contains all 120 pencils.  The wooden box will cost you an arm and a leg though (on dickblick the box would be 183$, where the set of 72 would cost 87$)

So far the pencils seem to be better then the studio pencils. They are a bit more pigmented and seem to layer on the paper easier. They also blend better with a spirit blender, but they do suffer from clumping if you try to blend layers of colors. It seems that around 3 layers of color it just becomes harder and harder to add layers. 

Once the drawing is done i will do a final review of the pencils

Work in Progress "Swan" Colored Pencil Drawing

This is my newest drawing that i'm working on.
It is after a picture that i took at a local zoo. This swan seemed very interested as it came close to the fence and gave a perfect opportunity for a picture.
For this work i'm using Faber-Castell Polychromos Pencils on Fabrianno Drawing paper.

Rose Drawing and final review on Derwent Studio Pencils

My Rose drawing is finally finished and with it comes my definitive review on the Derwent Studio Pencils. Here is the final result

The drawing took about 3 hours to make thanks to horrible blending of the Studio Pencils. 
If this would have been done with for example Prismacolor or Faber-Castell Polychromos this would take half the time to complete.

In the close-up picture you can see the horrible blending and clumping these pencils suffer from. 

Here's my personal opinion about these pencils. 

- First of these pencils do not blend at all. I have probably set it a few times before and i will keep on saying it. The pigment left behind clumps, rather then blend into each other or the paper

- Secondly they are not very pigmented and you will need to either use very dark colors or press very hard the actually get them to leave some pigment behind (pinks and purples are particularly low in pigment)

- Thirdly they leave a lot of pigment residue on the drawing (especially when you need to press harder to get some color from your pencil) 

-  Lastly there is a very small range of reds, pinks and purples compared to the blues, greens and browns which are present in excess. 

The only plus point i found is that they erase very well, even with a regular eraser. 

I would personally return them if i could, however several months have passed since i purchased them so sadly this not an option. I really don't know if the pencils are just that bad or if i have a old / bad batch of pencils.

However if the pencils are as they should be then i do NOT recommend these pencils to anyone, especially not students or beginners. The quality of the pencils can be a huge turn-off and make you not want to try colored pencil drawing which is a very fun medium and full of possibilities with the right supplies.

Work in progress and Derwent studio pencils review

I have had a set of Derwent Studio pencils laying around for a while now and i thought it was finally time to give them a go and what better way to test pencils then with a drawing.

I decided i would draw a few roses. I started with the pinks and reds on the flower petals and quickly noticed that the pigment in the colors that i was using where not very intense and it took a few layers to get the desired color intensity. The choice of pinks and reds is also very poor - only 9 in this spectrum. Needless to say after only the first few petals i was pretty annoyed and frustrated about the quality and was about ready to give up.

To add to the above: these pencils are a blending nightmare and i only got the blending half decently done using an odorless mineral spirit. Even so the pigment gets lifted and moved around rather then blending into each other and into the paper.

The pigment has a tendency to clump on top of the paper. No matter how much you try these pencils are almost unblendable, even with other pencils from the set. In the image above you can see the blending between the pink and purple does not transition smoothly, leaving a horrible mess.

After 3 layers of color the paper becomes to saturated with wax from the pencils and they hardly take anymore layers. Putting a darker color on the lighter one makes the colors clump as can be seen in the previous image. On the green leaves of the rose you can see the wax build up / clumping which does not go away with blending.

These pencils are labeled as Student grade, however they are not worth the money! (ranging from 90$ for the full set) Since i don't like to leave work unfinished i will continue this drawing and work on the second rose. Once the drawing is done i will post the final result and a final review on the Derwent studio pencil set, however i do not think my opinion will change much.

Step by step drawing "Piggy"

Here is the next step by step guide of one of my colored pencil drawings. 
In this post i will show you how i worked on this little pink piglet. 

This drawing was made using Prismacolor Pencils and some Derwent Coloursoft Pencils on Daler-Rowney Fine Grain -Heavyweight Paper. (please note that i am not affiliated with any brands, but i have added links to materials used for people that might be interested) 

1. The first thing i started to color after the initial sketch was done was the snout of the pig as it would be the most color intense part on the drawing. Using layers of pinks and reds i got the nose to a satisfactory point and started working on the ears.

2. At this point i did one of the piglets ears and compared the colors with the snout. I was pretty happy with the intensity of the colors and started working on the rest of the body. 
First thing i did was put the eye in its place leaving white where the eyelashes would be and then continued on with the shading around the eye and the snout.

3. at this point the drawing is finished. 
I added a few more shades of grey and pink the the fur on the pig and added shades of purple and grey to the legs. 
In places i used a white gel pen to accentuate the fur and to add some details to the drawing.
I decided to leave the background white as this would make the piglet the center of attention. 

This drawing took about 8 hours to complete. The coloursoft and Prismacolor pencils can easily be blended together. I used the pinks from the Prismacolor set as they have great variety of shades that were perfect for this drawing and some shades of grey and purple from the Coloursoft set.

Step by Step drawing "Piglets"

Welcome back to another step by step demonstration of one of my colored pencil drawings.
This drawing was made straight after "Wild Boar" and uses most of the same colors.

This drawing was made using Derwent Coloursoft Pencils on Daler-Rowney Fine Grain -Heavyweight Paper. (please note that i am not affiliated with either brands, but i have added links to materials used for people that might be interested) 

1 The base layers of colors are put on in a thicker layer this time thanks to the "Wild Boar" drawing i already had the colors for the fur and noses in mind. I left the white fur parts colorless as these will be made later on with greys

2. In the next stage of the drawing i added even more colors and shading to the little piglets and defined their eyes, fur and snouts
As you can see on the white fur parts i have added some grey tones to give some depth

3. At this point i added more colors to the fur and snouts to define the shades even more and i started working on the snow. I only put a few light layers of shading to the snow to give indications as to where it will be.

4. This is the final result

At this point i have the entire background done (the background was done in 1 go) and i have defined the shadows in the snow and around the legs. 
For final details i used a white gel pen to add some snow on the piglets.

This drawing took 15 hours to complete. I had the same problem as on the "Wild Boar" drawing which was the blending of colors. But all in all i'm happy with the result!

Step by step drawing "Wild Boar"

Here is the next step by step guide of one of my colored pencil drawings. 
In this post i will show you how i worked on this cute and curious boar. 

This drawing was made using Derwent Coloursoft Pencils on Daler-Rowney Fine Grain -Heavyweight Paper. (please note that i am not affiliated with either brands, but i have added links to materials used for people that might be interested) 

1. After making the basic sketch of the boar i went straight on to a light layer of color on the boar. I added some darker colors around the head to define it more and then moved on to the boar's snout. 
I layered multiple skin tones (peach, pink and blush pink) together with reds and purples ( Loganberry, Blackberry and Scarlet)

The nose holes of the snout are made using multiple colors instead of a black pencil, for this i used dark blues and purples.

2. I added some more reds, browns and purples to the nose and decide it was time to move on to the fur. I started with lighter layers and worked on to the dark layers. i also made the legs on the boar leaving white patches for snow. 

3. I found that after doing the entire fur coat of the boar that i had to much dark colors in certain area's and i erased some of it replacing it with lighter colors.

I also started working on the background in this phase. The trees in the far back are done with a light grey pencil. The more forward the foliage is the darker the grey tone is ( in order from light to dark: Dove Grey, Steel Grey, Persian Grey and Mid Grey)

The snow on both the ground and the legs of the boar are done with light blues, greens and greys (Cloud blue, Green Grey, Pale Mint and Dove Grey)

Here is a quick distant view of the work at stage 3. I stepped back a moment to see what needs work. I looked for specific areas of the drawing that popped out to much or needed some more detail to make it more noticeable.

4: The Final result

From the last stage up to this point i added the background and a bit more shading to the snow. As well as a few darker layers on the snout and some whiskers

This drawing took 15 hours to complete. The coloursoft pencils don't blend that great compared to other brands such as Faber-Castell Polychromos or Prismacolor. So it took a while to get the desired coverage without saturating the paper. Due to this the drawing looked gritty and had to be blended a lot to cover the white of the paper for a smooth look.

Step by Step drawing "Marbles"

Over the next few days i will post a few more step by step stages of some of my colored pencil drawings. As with the "Red Glass" and "Butterfly" drawing i will show different stages of the drawing with an explanation of what was exactly being done at that stage.

Drawing colorful glass marbles was quite fun as it was my first time drawing realistic glass. 
It was a challenge to make sure all the light reflections where in the right place and to keep a glaze on the marbles to give them a nice shiny glass like surface.

This drawing was made using Derwent Coloursoft Pencils on Daler-Rowney Fine Grain -Heavyweight Paper. (please note that i am not affiliated with either brands, but i have added links to materials used for people that might be interested) 

1. After sketching all the marbles i put a light layer of color on all the marbles and decide to start with the ones that had the most intense and dark colors. I started out with the black marble on the left. After that i put some color on the red marbles.

2. The next marble was the center one and with the black marble next to it more refined and almost done i started putting on colors. Using the red and yellow on the black marble i was able to get the right intensity of colors. 

3. With the front colors in place i moved on to the colors that are visible on the inside of the marble. These colors had to be light, but yet defined to keep a level of depth and the glass effect of marbles. 
Especially the white lines where important for the illusion of depth.

4. After finishing up the previous marble (up to a satisfactory point), i went on to work on the next marble. The green yellow of this marble was tricky to get right as it was made of a blend of yellow and green colors from my pencil set. 

5. I left the green yellow marble at the point you see in this image and decided it was better to get some more marbles around it done so i could use those as a reference for the final layers of green and yellow. 
The swirls on the center front marble had a base layer of color from the first stage after sketching the drawing. I started with the bright colors and worked around the swirls one by one to make sure all the colors where in place. 

6. The next step was to define the colors and to fill in the dark center of the marble. The dark center helped the front colors "pop out". After a bit more of refining i decided to leave the marble as it was and move on to the next marbles. I do this quite often as this helps with getting the right contrast between marbles. If anything needs more color afterwards it is always easier to go back and add some color. 

7. I started working on the other marbles around the center. For most marbles i added another few layers of color, but no definitive layers. The dark and light blue marbles were the first to be done as they only had a small amount of different colors to them

8. After finishing up the blue marbles i move on to the remaining marbles and started with the ones that required the least amount of work. Most of the unfinished marbles left did not required much work. I left the small front center marble for last

9. The final result.
I added some glazing to the black marbles with white other then that i added shading and details where required. 

The drawing took about 30 hours to make but as i said it was the first time drawing realistic glass which made the drawing a fun challenge. 

A few tips for drawing glass. 
The color around reflections (as seen in the drawing on top of most marbles) are more pastel / faded then the rest of the colors. Make sure you define the reflective areas and work around them with light layers for a smooth transition from light to dark. 

Due to light reflecting through the glass you will have multiple shades of color. Work from lighter colors to dark to get the different shades.
